Pre-Season Style
A playbook for transitional dressing
Okay, hear me out! August can feel like pre-season. Summer’s still on the field, but fall’s warming up on the sidelines. Technically there’s a month of summer left… but stores are starting to fill up with coats, football schedules are out, and I personally like the idea of red wine at dinner without sweating.
We are creeping up to the time of year where I usually fumble my wardrobe. It’s too hot to fully switch my wardrobe but too late in the season to buy anything else too summery. September only adds to the confusion. One breezy morning that feels like fall followed by a 90-degree kickoff at noon. You know the days I’m talking about??
So this year, I’m running a better game plan. And guess what… you’re on my team.
Kickoff:
A few of these I’ll wear as-is for the next few weeks, but they’ll also make sense once fall hits. This kaftan and Massimo Dutti blue dress feel effortless now and layer perfectly later. Staud is throwing out some great easy sets (see this version for sleeves), and this Toteme is a transitional staple. Throw any of these knits over the shoulders and you’re set.

Massimo Duti never fails me (especially during limbo). This white top is an easy yes, the brown adds some interest, and the green is the perfect color.
First Down:
Transitional MVPs. Fun pieces that work for the August heat but layer up effortlessly come October. Also think basics - some good denim, your go-to button down, easy sets and shoes.
I probably sound like a broken record but layered pieces are the key to a W. Loulou de Saison (for price +quality), Rohe (for silhouette), and Lisa Yang (for the classics) are always my first stop.

Second Down:
Event pieces that read fall but won’t suffocate you at a September wedding. We’ve all been there.
Midfield Play
I like to focus on color when the weather can’t be trusted. I keep my nails black year-round, but swapping bright colors for richer tones (browns, greys, reds) always works.
Suede is everywhere again. Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Prada all showed it, and even Zara has a full suede edit. I love it most in shoes and bags.
This fall also feels drapey. Runways were full of layered coats and fluid shapes.
I’ve never loved shearling, but this coat might convert me.
Touchdown!
If the play-by-play references didn’t give it away… yes, I’m already counting down to Alabama game day. Roll Tide.
Xx, LVR
