The Summer Dress Theory
There’s a certain kind of woman I always notice in the summer. She’s wearing a long dress. Probably something linen, or a crisp cotton poplin, maybe even a light voile. It’s not trying too hard, and neither is she. Not fussy. Not over-styled. Just simple and right.
Her hair’s done in a way that feels entirely uncalculated. She’s wearing the same jewelry she always wears, and it works. On her arm: a raffia tote that’s part chic, part Mary Poppins. You know what I mean? A bottomless, unstructured, yet always elevated bag.
She’s clearly getting things done. Grocery store. Work. Mahjong. A facial (dare I say botox?). Picking up dry cleaning, a bottle of wine, and then disappearing. Somewhere in the middle, she probably did a rapid clean of the house (just in case someone drops by). Yet she still looks as chic as ever. And I’d bet she didn’t think twice about her outfit.
So that brings me to my Summer Dress Theory.
When it’s hot, when you have too much to do, when your brain is tired and your skin is adjusting to the summer sun, the answer is not another outfit formula — it’s a dress. The kind that asks for nothing but shoes and a bag, and gets you through the day looking like you have everything handled. Even if you don’t.
